Christoph Tang Completes His Swim

Professor Christoph Tang

On 29th April Chris completed his sponsored swim in memory of Hannah and to raise funds for The Meningitis Research Foundation.

A HUGE thankyou to the many friends and family who sponsored Chris.

As many of you know Hannah was determined to have followed a career in medicine so this is a particularly poignant event as Chris is currently Professor of Cellular Pathology at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford, having recently moved from the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection at Imperial College London. His group studies the pathogenesis and prevention of disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis and Shigella flexneri, particularly during interactions with the host innate immune system.

You can still sponsor him via his Just Giving page >>

Chris explians why raising funds for The Meningitis Research Foundation is so valuable:

The Meningitis Research Foundation provided the first ever grant support to the group. This was to study the way in which Neisseria meningitidis can survive in the back of the throat without causing any signs or symptoms. This award was pivotal to the success of the group and we not only learnt interesting things about the bacterium, but the group was able to develop techniques and resources, which we continue to use in the laboratory nearly ten years later. It also provided the launchpad for the career of a young scientist, Dr Rachel Exley, who is still studying the bacterium and has devoted her subsequent career to the eradication of meningococcal disease.
